GENERAL NEWS Press News Journal, Canton, Mo., Thursday, February 21, ii/ UWP--a unique experience for PNJ reporter by Dan Steinbeck What is it really like to tour with Up With People for a year? For me, Up With People was the most different year of my life. Different doesn't really do justice, but it does suggest variety. I got into Up With People, quite by accident and impulsively after seeing a show the day after my college graduation. Until I saw that show, I had no thoughts of being a part of them except as an audience member enjoying the show. I realized UWP was more than just a show. One of my main reasons for wanting to travel with them was improving my contact with nursing home residents, hospital patients, prisoners, and the other special people. Much of this contact was done in short visits to various institutions, and not from the full two-hour show, for which Up With People is more commonly known. Nonetheless, the show was a very real part of the year. It was the grueling training for every show (and we did more than 100 shows of at least one-half hour long) that I began to appreciate being able to blend voices with voices, instruments, and choreo- graphy into a production. It was continuously drilled into our minds by the Up With People staff that there was always something we could learn from whatever was the situation. l learned you must sometimes step out - dare to be different or forever regret whatever missed opportunity passed. I leared to find out something special from nearly every person I met along the way. I learned how to deal with people who may not agree with your stand. I learned how to live out of a suitcase for a year. It took my year with Up With People to realize that when your dollar is high on foreign markets, it may mean my foreign friends will be spending more of their money to get to this country. It took spending an afternoon at a German concentration camp, with a goodwill is delivered, as it was to the guide, how the terrible memories can be overcome. It took several multi-lingual Euro- peans to show me how much we in general in America are to be put to shame, because we don't know all the rules of our own language, let alone another language. It took countless hours with handi- capped and special olympic partici- pants to realize how blessed I was to be able to move my arms and legs normally, and the least I could do was share the use of my limbs with these less fortunate. The Up With People show itself is one of glitter and sparkle, but many times the only thing that kept me being the spark for the show, was a person, family or group of persons that, unbeknown to them, touched me in such a way, I often felt I was taking more than I was fairly giving. By the end of the year, my cast of approximately 120. knew each other very well -- a laugh, a certain clothing outfit, a mannerism, a reaction- was a giveaway to the identity of people who had been total strangers from many countries and all walks of life, less than a year before. It is still fun for me to see Up With People, and I still believe in the message of communicating with the people and reaching out. I have learned to accept that my cast, though we were close at the end of that year, is once again scattered all over the world. Letters from hosts, friends, and cast members are precious few and I'm aware I'm not sure when I'll see some of them, or if I'll ever see some of them again. Up With People is not a religious or political group. Indeed there have been many different beliefs held by the nearly 8,000 of us that have been honored to be called cast members. But when you travel with such a group, you learn other's beliefs, how to respect them, and still be a friend to these people, even during disagree- 1 I STBHE flAVEH Res|dl e Care Licensed Professional Care Dr., R.N. and L.P.N. on coil 24 hrs. I stayed with very poor people, and I utayed with very rich.. But each family was -- and still is -- special because they opened their home to me and my friends ira Up With People. My year ended th-ree.years ago. In spite of all the rough encounters, it was a beneficial experience for me, But it was time to let someone else have the experience, and to really put in practice the things I had learned. This is not to say Up With People is for everyone, and this is not to say this is the only way one can have similar experiences. This is not to say these are my only experiences, but this is my friends at home. Up With People as a living experience is history for me, the message goes on in 500 new students each year.
