Sealants to prevent dental decay in youth
Missouri dentists will be helping
lower-income school children "seal
out" dental decay this fall through a
cooperative program with the state
Department of Health and the Lewis
County Health Dept.
Through the new program, dentists
in Lewis, Clark, Marion and Knox
Counties will be providing eligible
children with free dental sealants.
Sealants are recommended by dentists
to help all children prevent dental
¢lay and its more costly treatment
later.
The procedure is simple. An acrylic
coating is first applied over the
cleaned chewing surface of children's
teeth and then allowed to harden.
No anesthetic is needed and there is no
pain.
The sealant then acts as a barrier to
". kmlp food bacteria from collecting
' in all the grve$ o£ the tooth. This
hell keep the chewing surface
cavity-free as long as the sealant is in
laee.
Brushing and flossing and the use of
flourides must be continued, however,
even after teeth are sealed This is
because sealants are not as effective
m the smooth surfaces of the teeth.
cond and seventh grade children
from low,income families will be
notified this fall if they are eligible for
the sealant program. The family must
th make an appointment with a local
.tist who has agreed to place the
free dental sealants.
All sealants will be placed in private
dtai offices, and the child must take
his eligibility notice with him for the
dental appointment.
In addition to helping provide dental
care to children who might not
oeherwi receive it, the program is
also cost efficient. It has been many other medical and health care
estimated that a tooth can be sealed organizations have endorsed the use of
four times for roughly what one filling sealants to prevent cavities in
would cost. children's teeth.

The Federal Crop Insurance Corpor-
ation, an agency of USDA, has
expanded its crop insurance program
for 1986 based on the producer's actual
production history on insurable grain
crops in Missouri, according to
Howard Sjogren, Field Operatip, ns
Office Director in Columbia. Accord-
ingly, producers able to prove
above-average yields may receive
higher guarantees with no additional
premium except in extreme high risk
areas.
In order for producers to qualify for
this program on their 1986 spring
planted crops they need to certify their
production and acreage to their local
ASCS office within 30 days after
harvest ; or by providing acceptable
records (including harvested disposi-
tion} for the crop prior to January 15,
1986 in order that the 1985 yield may be
included in the yield calculation and
unit division when applicable. Records
received after that date may be used
for 1986 unit determination hut may
not be used until 1987 for yield
determination.
Certification forms are available at
the offices of local insurance agents
who sell Federal Crop or Multi-Peril
insurance. These agents can provide
advice on their completion.
